Cerro del Zamorano
Climb to the highest peak in the state of Querétaro
‘Cerro’ means ‘hill’ in Spanish, and this route is defined by little else. Our path rolls along some bumps for about 30m, before we get into some gentle slopes for 15km as we head to the base of the ‘hill’. We’ll stop there to fill up on gels and liquids.
Then we make our way to the highest peak in the state, in a town called Trigos, at 2587m above sea level. There’s no sugar-coating this ride; it’s hard. The way to the top is characterized by a winding, at times very steep (15%) road with stunning views of the valleys below.
The good news? What goes up, must come down, so the adrenaline junkies in the group can choose to descend the mountain. We don’t recommend the descent unless you’ve got disc brakes, and you’re a capable descender. If you don’t feel up to it, you can hitch a ride with one of the follow-cars down the mountain. No judgement.
